The Wild Horse Ranch is first and foremost a historical preservation group, and secondly we endeavor to offer an education training center to individuals looking to learn valuable skills.
|
|
If you want to learn it, You have to live it!
|
Are you looking to learn a trade? We currently have openings for 3 individuals to apprentice in:
- Welding
- Mechanics
- Machining
- Carpentry
These positions are not paid positions. We are looking for individuals who would be interested in trading their help on the Ranch for training in one of these areas.
For those simply wishing to gain experience in one or more of these areas, you’re more than welcome to come for as long as you like. We do, however, expect at least a 2 month stay. It’s very important for us that people coming to the Ranch learn some new skills, and for us we find it’s very difficult for someone to learn new skills in less than 2 months.
Depending on how long you stay, we can offer you some enrichment. If you choose to stay for a 6 month period, you can learn and study 2 areas on the Ranch (as their main focus) and 2 secondary areas. If you come for a 1 year stay, you can learn 4 areas, and 4 optional areas. These areas are listed below:
·Welding ·Machining · Mechanics · Horse riding · Carpentry ·Jointery ·Canoeing ·Archery ·Physiotherapy ·Wild Plant Identification ·Organic Gardening · Horse Care · Fine Woodworking · Vehicle Restoration
This is a great opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge and skills. Invest in yourself!

The Wild Horse Ranch Association was incorporated on March 13, 1995. It was created to provide a home for 25 feral horses adopted from the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Suffield. These horses had been roaming wild in the Suffield Area for well over 100 years.

The horses that have survived over this amount of time with no man-made housing or feed are a special breed. They are highly intelligent, incredibly athletic and agile. The Wild Horse Ranch seeks to maintain this wild herd in a healthy and natural state. The Ranch is located on a 100 year old homestead property just outside Sandy Lake Alberta.
Over the past 15 years, quite a lot of activity has taken place at this once sleepy homestead. We have had Senior's Care Facilities take their patrons and spend time on the Ranch - riding some of the horses, as well as being taken on a wagon-ride through the forest. We have also had school groups come to visit. As well we have been very active with international tourism over the past few years. In efforts to build a more economically self-sustaining project, rather than one run by donations, various projects have been proposed and some have already begun. These include developing a few horses with a highly trained rider for advertising and promotional work, as well as the construction of the Wild Horse Ranch Riding School.
The focus of the Ranch is always the horses. At the Wild Horse Ranch, we do not "break" horses in a traditional sense. Although all of these horses are wild, a keen few, perhaps out of curiosity, approach and interact with humans. Using horse-training techniques past down through the generations, we gain the horse's trust and respect. It is important to maintain the horses "spirit" when training a horse, for there is a world of difference between a horse that is "broken", and a horse that will happily give it's master 100%.
We are looking for individuals interested in working with horses at an advanced level, as well we are willing to train individuals who demonstrate a certain level of commitment. There is a huge amount of potential in our horses for Display & Promotion work as well as Television & Film Industry work.
